Sefi Atta: Selected Plays
Sefi Atta

published 2018 6" x 9" • 496 pages
ISBN 9781623719791 • paperback • $25.00

FIRST EVER COLLECTION OF PLAYS BY AWARD-WNNING NIGERIAN-AMERICAN PLAYWRIGHT SEFI ATTA

“This is contemporary family drama at its best: jam-packed with complex characters of largely middle class backgrounds; terse, witty dialogues that demonstrate Atta’s skills at portraying genders and generations with widely differing aspirations; sibling rivalries, conjugal dynamics and meddling extended families; best friends and bad neighbors; and a whole plethora of religious practices and ethical mores which affect business ventures, professional conduct, and personal relations. This and much more you will find in Atta’s Selected Plays—a drama collection which offers thought-provoking entertainment for theatre lovers.”
Christine Matzke, University of Bayreuth

Sefi Atta was born in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1964. She is the author of Everything Good Will Come, Swallow, News from Home, A Bit of Difference and The Bead Collector. Atta has received several literary awards, including the 2006 Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa and the 2009 Noma Award for Publishing in Africa. Her radio plays have been broadcast by the BBC and her stage plays have been performed internationally. She divides her time between the United States, England and Nigeria.

Praise for Sefi Atta

“An old man, I rejoice to see, in these times, the lights shining bright, on the stage and beyond, for Sefi Atta . . .” —J.P. Clark

“I had only known her as a novelist. Now I can hardly wait for her next theatre outing . . .”—Wole Soyinka

“She is one of the bright and shining lights in the theatre, with works that address and confront issues that currently plague our existence.” —Patrick-Jude Oteh, Artistic Director, Jos Repertory Theatre

“She has a stunning ability to create characters that appear very much alive for readers and audiences alike. She creates characters that are intricate and deeply rooted in social reality.” —Matthias Gehrt, Artistic Director, Drama Department of Theatre Krefeld and Mönchengladbach
