Broons' Days Oot!, The

published 2009 • 6 ¾” x 9” • 144 pages • full color illustrations throughout
ISBN 9781902407944 • paperback • $14.95

The Broon’s Days Oot! is a guide to 52 days out in Scotland, with over 200 things to do and places to go – ‘and you don’t have tae pay to get in tae them a’ – there’s loads o’ free places!’

Written by the Broons family, and full of wee stories, postcards home, letters, notes, collectors’ cards, leaflets and clippings about their favorite places all stuck into a scrapbook-style book, The Broons’ Days Oot! contains great days out in Scotland. The Broons are always going on day trips – walks, hill walking, cycling, beaches – from Glebe Street, and the But an’ Ben. With extensive coverage of Historic Scotland and National Trust for Scotland sites, galleries and museums, castles and gardens, this book will give you tons of ideas of things to see and do – whether you join in a Ghost Walk, have a day at the Highland Games, or just pack basket and go for a picnic. The family takes turns in choosing where to go, and the book is full of cameos as the Broons – Joe, Daphne, Maw, Paw, the Twins, Granpaw, Horace, Maggie, Hen and the Bairn – all describe their favorite days oot.

With a folded wall map of Scotland – Horace’s class project borrowed from Glebe Street School – with lists and up-to-date details of all the places listed, in a pouch on the inside back cover.

Over 200 historic sites, beautiful locations, visitor attractions and events, including:
Edinburgh Castle, Kelvingrove Art Gallery, The Burrell Collection, Stirling Castle and Bannockburn, Arran, Iona, Urquhart Castle, the Falkirk Wheel, canals, Culloden, Fort George, Balmoral, the Tenement House, Holyrood Palace, the Scottish Parliament, Arthur’s Seat, Dundee, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness, Stirling, New Lanark, Stanley Mills, CalMac and ferries, Loch Lomond, Shetland and Orkney, House of Bruar, Pittenweem, Glasgow’s Science Centre, Mackintosh art and architecture, Calanais, a black house, Kilmartin, Highland Games, Inveraray Jail, Skara Brae, Blair Drummond Safari Park, Rothesay, Hunterian Museum, John O’ Groats, Ben Nevis.

One thing’s for sure – they are all happy days!

The Broons comic strip is hugely popular, with the The Sunday Post having over 1,000,000 readers every week. The book includes strips from years gone by that will make you smile, as the Broons enjoy their days oot, rain or shine!

Media Reviews
"It may seem odd that a series of books reflecting the Broons' distinctly dated way of life should become the Scottish publishing success story of the present decade. Yet - 18 months ago 'Maw Broon's Cookbook' was number one bestseller for nine weeks, easily outselling the latest offerings from such celebrity foodies as Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson. The follow-up, 'Maw Broon's But an' Ben Cookbook', shot straight to the top of the Scottish charts last year. Now the Broons are taking on the world of travel literature with a new book seemingly tailor-made for our straightened economic times. 'The Broons Days Oot!' explores the vast riches of a nation without blowing the housekeeping, bringing effortless wit and authority to every expedition, from a ramble up Ben Nevis to a dander down the Royal Mile. Never once does a Broon character step out of character. Their days out are punctuated with tartan travel rugs, picnic hampers, boiled sweets for the car trips and knotted handkerchiefs for days on the beach. And yet, while this may reek of nostalgia for a bygone age, the 52 expeditions featured in the book remain unerringly relevant to the modern tourist itinerary. In a rare concession to the 21st century, the Broons even provide website details for the attractions they visit. The Broons are hitting the road for the ultimate nostalgia trip... a journey that celebrates the delights of our great nation and the values that bind us together."
—The Scottish Daily Mail

"Packed with ideas for what to see and do on day-trips around Scotland - a cracking selection of over 200 places to go and things to do. And 'The Broons Days Oot' isn't just groundbreaking for its unique take on holidaying in Scotland. It is also the first book to come out in Scotland in Braille on publication date - usually it takes months after the book's launch to achieve this."
—The Sunday Post

"A clever book – Waverley’s books on the Broons have become something of a publishing sensation.  'The Broons Days Oot!' will appeal to those who'd never usually dream of buying a travel book — and even those who hardly ever travel! A highly entertaining guide to what Scotland has to offer."
—The Lanark Gazette
