Watertower, The
SLJ Best Book of the Year
Gary Crew; illustrated by Steven Woolman

Published 2014 ē Ages 7-14 • 32 pages • full color
ISBN 9781566563314 • paperback • $8.95

20th Anniversary Edition
Winner of the Australian Children's Picture Book of the Year Award
School Library Journal Best Book of the Year

Nobody in Preston could remember when the watertower was built, or who had built it, but there it stood on Shooter's Hill - its iron legs rusted, its egg-shaped tank warped and leaking - casting a long dark shadow across the valley, across Preston itself.

Gary Crew has written many award-winning books for children including First Light which won the Australian Children's Picture Book of the Year in 1994. He lives in Queensland.

Steven Woolman's big-screen style landscapes and eerie black surrounds, reminiscent of a darkened movie theater, set the scene for The Watertower, his ninth published book.

Media Reviews
The Watertower... continues to attract interest - and readers. Crew, a prestidigitator of words, has managed to work his magic... -The Horn Book Magazine

"It would be an understatement to describe this book as unusual... a "must purchase" — Children\'s Book Review

"... text and illustrations work inseparably to create a strange but compelling whole." -School Library Journal
