Buying a Property: Ireland
(Cadogan Guides, USA)
Cathy Gerrard & Joseph McArdle

5 1/2" x 8 1/2" • 320 pages • full-color photos • maps
ISBN 9781860113727 • paperback • $19.95

The most comprehensive guide of its kind – written by local experts, filled with case studies and packed with essential information on every step of the buying process: dealing with estate agents, insurance, security, letting for income, building from scratch and renovation. The guide examines the best places to buy, from Dublin to Cork, the Burren to the Mountains of Mourne, with profiles of the regions and chapters on settling in; and there’s all the specialist legal advice you need: on money transfer and taxes, wills, surveys, permits and fees. For a new start, a second home, a business project or a dream retirement, this book will prove indispensable.

Cathy Gerrard was born in Dublin, was brought up in Co.Tipperary and has lived in Hungary, Italy and New York. She has worked as a language teacher, as director of a language school and as a writer for an e-learning company. She now works as a freelance writer and editor. She has renovated a house in Dublin – dealing with renegade builders, discovering an unusual 18th-century roof and becoming an expert on regulations for listed buildings were just part of the process. She’s now in the midst of getting planning permission for another project, and these experiences underpin much of this book.

Joseph McArdle is a member of both the Irish and English Bars. He has practised commercial law in Ireland, worked in London, Nigeria, Kenya and Brussels, and for the past ten years has been a legal consultant to newly independent countries in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Balkans and the Caucasus.

"Consumer guides offering legal advice, insider knowledge and inspiring real-life stories" – Traveller

"An in-depth look at buying and living… Everything from employment law to etiquette" – Ideal Home
