Large, bustling Rome, one of the most popular destinations in the world, can be overwhelming to first-time and experienced travelers alike. Where to go for coffee, a light breakfast, lunch, or just a snack at a reasonable price? Café Life Rome, the first guide book dedicated solely to the cafés and bars of Rome, answers these questions. Instead of relying on city guides with cursory listings or the hit-and-miss word of mouth, this book, with its rich photography and informed descriptions, steers travelers through Rome’s 5,000 bars to the perfect caffe.

Caffe: in Italian it means coffee, café, or bar—but with whatever shade of meaning, caffe is indisputably central to Roman life. This guide focuses on thirty of the best, in four different areas of the city. Some of these establishments are hundreds of years old and some are relatively young, but each has a story to tell. It may be a personal tale of World War II, or seventeenth-century Italy, or an anecdote about a famous writer. These cafés also offer food and drink at reasonable prices, or a specialty of the house worth a small splurge. Most of the choices are conveniently located in the central areas of the city, within walking distance of each other. Tourists will be able to choose a comfortable bar close to their accommodations, make it a hangout of their own and watch the Romani at close quarters. It may even be a place where Hemingway or Fellini came to unwind, too.

Joseph Wolff is a freelance and screenplay writer whose favorite Italian city is Rome.

Roger Paperno has shot photos for clients all over the planet, working to capture the beauty present in everything from smoky Roman cafés to flamboyant cruise ships in the Panama Canal.

Media Reviews

"A quirky book with offbeat, sometimes offhand, charm, Cafe Life Rome profiles 22 central-city Roman cafes, with five gelaterias thrown into the mix. Wolff features long quotations from proprietors who talk about the history of their place, who once worked there, who famously played around there, and so on. You can discover where Fellini hung out when he was making "La Dolce Vita" and order his favorite sweet. Photography by Roger Paperno rounds the book out nicely."
-- San Francisco Chronicle
