Florida (Travellers' Wildlife Guide)
Fiona Sunquist, Mel Sunquist, and Les Beletsky

5 1/2" x 8 1/2" • 524 pages • full-color throughout
ISBN 9781566566513 (UK ISBN 9781905214563) • paperback • $29.95

"It contains short expert essays on Florida's flora and fauna, geography, ecosystems, parks, preserves, and to its credit, one titled 'Environmental Threats and Conservation Programs.' This is a tremendous amount of information, all very useful for an ecotourist.  That inclusiveness allows the traveler to carry this single guide rather than several. For academic settings, it would be useful in ecotourism programs and for training environmental interpreters and guides. Recommended. All levels."

Travelers go to Florida for sun, sand, surf, and visits to the state's world-famous theme parks, but increasingly also to explore Florida's incredible natural attractions: stunning subtropical scenery, wonderful hiking and bird-watching trails, exceptional fishing, boating, and canoeing, the wet wilderness of Everglades National Park, the continental US's only coral reefs, and glimpses of exotic wildlife. This book has all the information you need to find, identify, and learn about Florida's magnificent animal, plant, and sea life.

● Identifying, location, and conservation information on the most frequently sighted animals.

● Full-color illustrations of more than 600 of Florida's most common insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and plants.

● Information on the underwater animals most snorkellers and divers actually see.

● Photos and information on Florida habitats and on the most common plants you will encounter.

● Brief descriptions of the region's most frequently visited parks and reserves.

Easy to carry, entertainingly written, beautifully illustrated-you will want to have this book as constant companion on your journey.

Fiona Sunquist
is a science and natural-history writer. She has written many articles on wildlife and conservation, contributed chapters to several books, and for more than 15 years has been a roving editor for International Wildlife magazine.

Mel Sunquist is a professor in the department of wildlife ecology and conservation at the University of Florida, Gainesville. He teaches wildlife ecology and researches the ecology and conservation of carnivorous mammals.

Les Beletsky is a professional wildlife biologist and former university zoology teacher. Prior to taking up writing wildlife guides, he conducted many years of field research into the ecology and behavior of birds. He is the author of numerous books, including Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Peru in this series.

Media Reviews

"Fiona Sunquist, Mel Sunquist and Les Beletsky have compiled a spectacular reference book for anyone interested in the wonders of planet earth, let alone Florida's fish, flowers and fauna. This 524 page hard cover compendium encompasses identification, location and conservation information about the animals most frequently seen in the Sunshine State, along with full-color illustrations of more than 600 of the state's most common insects, fish, amphibians, birds, mammals and plants. And, there's special information on the underwater creatures most frequently seen by subterranean ogglers. You'll also find brief descriptions Florida's most frequently visited parks and reserves. The publishing of this book is perfectly timed to coincide with a ground swell of interest in our world's ecosystem in the current era of climactic sensitivity. It is one of a series intended for "ecotravelers." In fact, the first chapter is devoted to ecotourism how ecotourists are helping to preserve our planet. It's exciting reading even if you're not planning to go to Florida, and it's good to know there are attractions that are as big, if not bigger than Disney World for those who venture into this exotic state. When readers close the last cover of this book they will probably want to put it next to their encyclopedia or their favorite coffee table picture book for frequent intellectual refreshment in idle moments. It's that compelling."
