Under the Perfume Tree
Stories weaving patterns of past lives
edited by Judy Stone

5 1/2" x 8 1/2" • 320 pages
ISBN 9781405065184 • paperback • $12.95

A free-spirited Amerindian girl, encountering British sailors for the first time; a Dutch bo'sun marooned by pirates on the bare rock Saba; an indentured descendant of Pathan soldiers labouring on a hillside estate; a strange boy nurtured in a thriving community of former slaves, an illiterate Lebanese shoemaker and his teenage bride; a young magistrate moving his family from island to island; a single mother from Guangdong, China; a doctor's wife of aristocratic Prussian descent; a Guyanese student in London; these are some of the extraordinary ordinary people who feature in this collection of stories. Fiction or astonishing fact, recollection or recreation, this selection, over and above the telling of compelling stories, vividly captures the way people of different cultures and means have gone about the daily business of living in the West Indies over the last five hundred years.

Among the contributors to this unusual collection are established fiction writers Willi Chen of Trinidad, sculptor, painter, playwright, his most recent publication Chutney Power; Dominican Alick Lazare, author of Carib and other stories and many pieces for radio; Jamaican Beresford McLean, author of Broken Gourds; Guyanese Ryhaan Shah, author of A Silent Life. Published biographers include Jennifer Franco, a Trinidad journalist and author of When the Ti-Marie Closes; Barbadian Ezra Griffith, Professor of Psychiatry and of African-American Studies at Yale University, author of I'm Your Father, BoyMarina Gottlieb Sarles of the Bahamas is the author of Sand in My Shoes.  The brief memoirs of Privy Councillor John Hazell of Bequia, and the family history by his descendant, solicitor Peter Stone of Trinidad, were each published after the author's death.  Grenadian Vera Rickard has written a guide book on Grenada. The collection also introduces contributions by two new writers, Joseph Elias, a Trinidad businessman, and Marlene St Rose of St Lucia.
