The Annihilation of Fish
And other Stories
Anthony C. Winkler

5 1/2" X 8 1/2" • 166 pages
ISBN 9781405026390 • paperback • $12.95

It was the foul play that caused the annihilation of Fish, when the Devil was shot in the thick of a wrestling match. And there was only one way for the referee to put things right. With another murder. Death stalks the pages in this darkly comical and occasionally tragic collection of stories, which is set partly in Jamaica, partly amongst the Jamaican diaspora of the United States. There is the terrible fate of the tomato thief, the unseen revenge of New Banana, the unsolved murder of greedy Brooker Little and the suicide of the boy who pelted the foolish petchary.

On the lighter side of the grave are Monica's trip to Paris with her widowed husband and Alfred's conversations with his late wife concerning a letter-writing cow. And then there is the tourist who, in a Junior Constable's perplexed preliminary report, refuses to stay dead.

Other lively stories tell of sleepless Rachel, accused of the sin of concupiscence, and of poor Maud, whose bottom had grown fat.

Anthony C. Winkler was educated in Jamaica and in America, where he earned his BA and MA degrees in English. In the mid-70's he established himself as a full-time freelance writer resident in the USA, specializing in writing and producing textbooks for America's college level English composition market. His first novel, The Painted Canoe, was published in Jamaica in 1984. The Lunatic followed in 1987, and Winkler also wrote the screenplay for a highly successful film of this novel. Other works include Great Yacht Race (1992), Going Home to Teach (1995) and The Duppy (1997) In 1999 his original screenplay The Annihilation of Fish, the title story in this collection, was filmed in Los Angeles. Starring opposite James Earl Jones with Margot Kidder, Lynn Redgrave won Palm Beach Best Actress for her role as Poinsettia.
